Box Score 4 VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars (13-13, 9-4 UMAC) split with Northland before sweeping Crown in a pair of doubleheaders at the Vadnais Heights Dome. The Cougars and Northland started their doubleheader on Sunday afternoon before completing it on Monday morning. UMM lost 12-1 in game one to Northland before rebounding with a 9-4 win. After the completion of the Northland doubleheader the Cougars swept Crown winning 7-4 and 16-8.
GAME ONE vs. Northland
Alex Anderson drew a one out walk and stole second to get in scoring position for
Sam Hanson. Hanson drove her in with a single to make it 1-0, early in game one. The lead did not last long as the LumberJills came back with three runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the second as the Cougars fell behind 6-1. Morris would only pick up one more hit the rest of the way as they were struck out eight times in the final four innings.
Northland bats stayed hot as they would add on six runs in the final two innings picking up the 12-1 win.
GAME TWO vs. Northland
It was a better second game for the Cougars offense as UMM picked up four runs in the top of the first.
Kelsey Draper had a three run homer to make it 3-0 and then Allman had a solo shot pushing the lead to four. Draper then went to work shutting Northland down, not allowing a hit in the first three innings.
Kristy Hoge scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth, giving the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Northland picked up a run in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-1.
Morris tried to put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth as they put together a rally to score fours. The inning started with a walk and then three straight singles, the third single, by Hanson allowed
Brooke Decker and Anderson score.
Molly Olson scored on an error and Hanson scored on
Mackenzie Weatherly's groundout as the lead got as large as 9-1.
The LumberJills would score three more runs in the game but came up short as the Cougars won 9-4 to end a three game skid.
GAME ONE vs. Crown
After working out of a jam in the top of the first without allowing Crown to score a run the Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the second inning.
Sam Hanson and
Mandy Allman led off the inning with singles and then
Laura Lhotka walked to load the bases up.
Shelby Peterson picked up a RBI on a ground out to short. Kali Grote then hit a ball over the fence just inside the left field line for a three run homer, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead. Hanson would make it a 5-0 in the bottom of the third with a homer to right center.
The Storm got back in the contest with four runs in the top of the fourth. A double followed by a triple started the comeback as Crown took advantage of Cougar errors to make it 5-4 in the top of the fourth. After going scoreless in the bottom of the fourth Hanson hit her second homer of the game, this time hitting it to left center to give the Cougars some breathing room.
Molly Olson picked up a pinch hit RBI double in the bottom of the sixth making it 7-4 which is how it would end.
Hanson went the distance in the circle allowing two earned runs and eight hits. She needed just 84 pitches over seven innings of work.
GAME TWO vs. Crown
It was a high scoring first half for both teams in the second game of the doubleheader. Crown picked up three unearned runs to take the lead after the top of the first. Morris would respond with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Olson walked to start the inning and Anderson reached on a bunt single. Draper tripled with one out to bring in Olson and Anderson. After a HBP and walk the bases were loaded for
Shelby Peterson who doubled to left center to clear the bases. Minnesota Morris would score an unearned run in the second inning to make it 6-3.
Morris would bat through the lineup in the bottom of the third as they would again score five runs. Hanson would have the big hit in the inning, doubling down the line to drive in two. The Storm would work their way back into the game score two unearned runs in the top of the fourth and three more unearned runs in the top of the fifth to close to within three at 11-8.
The Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth making it 13-8. Grote had a RBI double in the inning to score Draper in the inning. After holding Crown scoreless in the top of the sixth the Cougars put the game away in bottom of the inning. Peterson and
Rikki Beaver had walks to start the inning. After a groundout Olson would end it with a homer to left field making it 16-8.
The Cougars will now play Martin Luther and Bethany Lutheran at the West Saint Paul Dome at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. as field and weather conditions are poor in Morris.
