Cougars Sweep Vikings, Earn #2 Seed

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. – The first and only home games could not have come at a better time for the Cougars (18-16, 14-7 UMAC) as they tried to clinch a spot in the UMAC Tournament. Needing one win, the Cougars did one better, sweeping Bethany Lutheran (20-18, (13-8) 10-2 and 8-0 to earn the second seed in Friday's UMAC Tournament.
 
GAME 1
 
Minnesota Morris quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first taking advantage of a leadoff walk. After Brooke Decker drew the walk, the Cougars had three straight singles, the third, by Sam Hanson gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. After two infield flies Mandy Allman came through with a bases clearing triple to right center.
 
Bethany Lutheran got a pair back in the top of the second but Hanson did her best to shut the Vikings down the rest of the way. She would not allow a hit in the final three and two thirds getting the complete game win. Morris got back on the board in the third, Kelsey Draper walked and was pinch run for by Rikki Beaver. Beaver would score on Cassie Sowada's double to right center.
 
In the bottom of the fourth Hanson and Draper each picked up a RBI as Alex Anderson and Molly Olson scored the sixth and seventh runs of the game for UMM. Laura Lhotka started a two out rally in the bottom of the fifth with a single up the middle. Ashley Splonskowski pinch ran for Lohtka at first. After a Decker single and an Anderson walk, Olson came to the plate with the bases loaded. Olson came through with a walk-off double to right center clearing the bases.
 
GAME 2
 
The Cougars did most of their damage in the bottom of the first in game two. They would send 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on five hits, three walks and two errors. Hanson drove in the first run of the game as Decker scored. Sowada had a two run double to center making it 4-0 after six batters. Lhotka had a two run triple making it 6-0. Lhotka would then score on an error to make it 7-0 before the inning was over.
 
Olson, having been left out of the scoring barrage in the first, did her damage with a huge home run over the left field wall to make it 8-0 leading off the bottom of the second.
 
In the circle Mackenzie Weatherly scattered four hits while striking out six in five innings to earn the win. She allowed just two runners past first base in the complete game victory.
