Cougars Split with Knights

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW ULM, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (6-10, 2-1 UMAC) picked up a split in the double header with Martin Luther on Saturday afternoon. After dropping game one 9-4, they rebounded with a 6-2 in the final game of the day.

GAME ONE

Brooke Decker got the Cougars started in the first game drawing a leadoff walk. She would then move up on a passed ball followed by a stolen base before Molly Olson drove her in on a ground out to short. Martin Luther would tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth; starting a streak of three straight innings the Knights would score a single run. Down 3-1 going to the top of the sixth, the Cougars pulled within one. Sam Hanson doubled and moved to third on Jordan Iverson's single. Cassie Sowada drove home Hanson with a sac fly to center.

The Knights would break the game open in the bottom of the sixth as they poured in six runs on six hits and a walk. The big hit came in the middle of the rally as a bases clearing triple drove in two Knights. Morris got two of those runs back in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough. Decker and Jessica Gordon scored the runs for the Cougars in the seventh. Olson and Mackenzie Weatherly drove in the runs for UMM in the inning.

GAME TWO

Martin Luther would be the team to strike first in the second game of the double header but it could have been a lot worse. The Knights led off the game with four straight hits but scored just once and the Cougars cut down runners at home twice before Weatherly struck out the final batter with the bases loaded in the inning. Minnesota Morris tied it up in the top of the third but they too left runners on in the inning. Decker scored her third run of the double header scoring on Hanson's single with two outs.

In the top of the fourth Shelby Peterson double with one out and then scored on Decker's sac fly to center to put UMM up 2-1. Martin Luther tied it back up in the bottom half of the inning but left another two runners in scoring position. The Cougars would not be denied as they got the lead back immediately as Hanson doubled with one out in the fifth before scoring on Kristy Hoge's two out double to left. The Cougars put the game away in the top of the sixth scoring three runs as three different Cougars picked up RBI's. Sowada, Olson and Hanson helped give the Cougars a four run cushion as they would hold on for the 6-2 win.
