Cougars Pick Up Two Big Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota Morris picked up two big UMAC wins on Tuesday afternoon, beating Bethany Lutheran 6-4 and Martin Luther 7-1. The Cougars improved to 10-6 in the UMAC with the wins. They also played Crown late on Tuesday but results/stats are not available at this time.

Morris scored quickly against the Vikings in the first game of the day. Gina Downie led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Molly Olson doubled from the number two spot in the lineup and put the Cougars on the board. Olson would score herself on a one out single by Sam Hanson. Hits by Hanson and Olson extended their hitting streaks once again.
 
Olson would single and score in the bottom of the third putting UMM up 3-0 after three complete. Bethany hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth but the Cougars got that run back thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Downie.
 
The Vikings tied the game in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits and sac fly. Morris would not let the game slip away scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Alex Anderson singled and scored the winning run on another Downie double. She would score on an error giving UMM an insurance run.
 
Mackenzie Weatherly came in to relieve Hanson in the circle with one out in the seventh to pick up the save. Downie finished the game 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
VS MARTIN LUTHER
 
The second game of the day was not as dramatic as the first and the Cougars never trailed. Olson extender her hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the top of the first. She scored on a single by Hanson with two outs; it was the 15th straight game with a hit for Hanson. The Knights tied it up in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homerun; it would end up being the only run Weatherly gave up in the game.
 
Minnesota Morris took the lead back in the top of the third, using speed to their advantage. Downie singled and stole second to start the inning. She would score a few pitches later as Olson singled to right center putting UMM up 2-1.
 
The Cougars would get some breathing room in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits. Cassie Sowada doubled to start the inning and was pinch run for by Maegen Anderson. After two quick outs Kristy Hoge doubled putting Morris up 3-1. Mandy Allman followed up with a single to center as Hoge crossed home plate. Kelsey Fisher pinch hit and delivered an RBI single through the right side giving Morris a 5-1 lead.
 
Olson hit a two run homer in the top of the seventh putting UMM up 7-1 and clinching the victory. Weatherly picked up the complete game win, going all seven innings and striking out seven. She allowed ten hits but just one extra base hit in the game.
