Late Touchdown Spoils Defensive Effort

EUREKA, Ill. – The Minnesota Morris (0-4, 0-3 UMAC) defense forced six turnovers on Saturday but a late touchdown gave Eureka (1-3, 1-2 UMAC) a 17-10 victory. Morris outgained the Red Devils 256-255 on the day.

Late in the first quarter Jon Henry converted a 23 yard field goal, giving UMM a 3-0 lead at the end of one. The Cougars defense forced two punts and a fumble in the first quarter. The second quarter was not favorable for Morris, as back-to-back drives ended in an interception and fumble. The second turnover of the quarter resulted in a touchdown for Eureka, who took a 7-3 lead.

The Cougars forced their second turnover of the half with 53 seconds left and quickly drove down for a go ahead touchdown as they lead 10-7 at the break. Caleb McLaren hit Kyle Petermeier on a 14 yard touchdown.

In the second half the Morris defense allowed just three points on the first nine drives of the half. At the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter they forced a turnover on four straight possessions.  Unfortunately Minnesota Morris could not score despite getting the ball into the red-zone twice. A pair of field goals were blocked by Eureka to kept the Cougars off the board.

Morris turned the ball over on downs with 1:18 left, giving the Red Devils with the ball at their own 26 yard line. Eureka quickly drove to the UMM 42 with 47 seconds left in the game. The next play put the Red Devils go to the Cougars 27 with about 30 seconds remaining. On a second and ten play Blake Robles hit Beau Anderson for a 27 yard touchdown with just 16 seconds left on the clock. The last second heave by Donnie Mavencamp from the Cougars 17 was intercepted, ending the game.

Caleb McLaren finished the day with 193 yards passing and a touchdown. Tyler Peterson had four catches for 37 yards. Kyle Petermeier had a touchdown catch for Morris. Cody Hickman had ten tackles, two sacks and three tackles-for-loss.
