MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris (20-11, 7-1 UMAC) wrapped up regular season play in style, sweeping Northland College (5-16, 1-7 UMAC) 25-4, 25-12, 25-16. The Cougars finished the night hitting .363 against the LumberJills. The win means the Cougars will finish with at least 20 wins in each of the last four seasons.
The Cougars were all over the LumberJills in the first set taking a 17-3 lead and running Northland dry of timeouts. Morris would go on to win the set by a score of 25-4. Morris hit .364 in the opening set with nine kills and just one error. The Cougars also had four aces, two by
Katie Reitsma.
Marissa Ekness led the set with five kills.
The second set was a little close as Morris held a small lead at 8-6. The Cougars would go on a four point run increasing their lead six and forcing a NC timeout. Morris kept pushing and their lead increased to 17-7. A service error gave the Cougars the 25-12 victory. Offensively the Cougars hit .500 in the second set.
Cori Becker and Ekness each had four kills in the set.
Morris made a few changes ahead of the third set and Northland took advantage, holding a small 5-3 lead early on. The LumberJills would stick with the Cougars until a 7-2 run gave UMM a 16-11 lead. Northland took a timeout trailing 18-12 but it could not slow Morris down. The Cougars would go on to win the set 25-16.
Ekness led the Cougars with 12 kills and .478 attack percentage.
Abby Tietz had a good senior night, finishing with nine kills and a .533 attack percentage. Becker also had a good senior night, racking up seven kills. The team's .363 attack percentage was the second highest in a match this season.
The Cougars tied a season high with 12 aces in the match.
Brooke Decker and Ekness each finished the match with three aces. Junior
Taylor Nordby added an ace on senior night; she will graduate early and was honored prior to the match.
Minnesota Morris will now host Wisconsin-Superior next Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a UMAC semi-final matchup.
