Bench, Points Off Turnovers Keying Cougars Success

MORRIS, Minn. – After picking up their third road win of the UMAC season on Tuesday, the Cougars (10-9, 8-0 UMAC) will head back out on the road tomorrow as they take on St. Scholastica (8-11, 5-3 UMAC) on Friday night. The following day they will take on Northland (2-16, 0-8 UMAC) to wrap up their longest road trip of the year.

Minnesota Morris could wrap up a spot in the conference tournament this weekend if they get two wins and Bethany Lutheran should drop a game. However, after five straight UMAC Championships in the regular season, just making the tournament is not their number one goal. The race for the regular season title is long from over and a big test comes on Friday night against the Saints.

St. Scholastica has not beaten the Cougars since 2012 in Duluth but the two teams have played tightly contested games throughout the last few meetings. Morris beat the Saints by just five in Morris on January 24 in their closest game of the conference season. In that game the Cougars erased a six point deficit at half to win 69-64. Forcing 14 Saints turnovers and turning them into 20 points proved to be the difference in the game.

The Cougars have four of the top seven three point shooters in the conference and the team ranks 20th in the nation in three point field goal percentage. Morris' 6.9 made three pointers per game ranks 35th in the country. However, UMM doesn't just score from three, they are averaging 26.3 points per game in the paint.

Morris' bench is scoring 23 points per game but that number is slightly higher in UMAC games. In addition the Cougars are scoring 23 points off turnovers in conference play while limiting their opponents to just 10.6 points off UMM turnovers.
