FT. MYERS, Fla. – Minnesota Morris (4-5) ended their five game skid with a 13-10 win over Dubuque University (3-1) on Sunday morning. The Cougars had combined to score 12 runs during their losing streak but came alive to score 13 in the win today.
Jake Schmitz went 4-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Chandler Erickson drove in four runs on three hits.
Jackson Gessell and
Donnie Mavencamp also had three hits on the day.
Eric Terres scored four runs to go along with his two hits.
The Cougars struck for two runs in the top of the first, to go on top early. UMM has scored in the first inning in all four wins this season. Mavencamp singled home Terres before
Willie Fust picked up a sac fly to drive in Schmitz. The Spartans would counter with a leadoff homer in the first to cut the UMM lead in half.
Both teams pushed a run across in the second and the game stayed a one run affair. Morris tried to run away from the Spartans scoring seven runs in the middle third of the game. Erickson and Fust had RBI singles in the fourth to put Morris up 5-2. In the next inning Morris scored three runs pushing their lead to six. Terres had a bunt single that saw a run score on an error and then scored after a steal of third resulted in another UD error. Erickson drove in Schmitz for the third run of the inning. Gessell had a two run single in the sixth to plate Fust and Mavencamp putting Morris up 10-2.
Dubuque wouldn't go away quietly and started to comeback in the bottom of the sixth with a sac fly. They would tack on another run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI groundout. The big inning came in the bottom of the eighth, as the Spartans scored five runs on five hits.
Morris got some insurance runs in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs. Schmitz had an RBI single to score Gessell and then Terres scored on a wild pitch. The third run of the inning scored on a single by Erickson.
Devin Waldvogel would give up a run in the bottom of the ninth but still earned the save for the Cougars.
Joey Hyde picked up the win going seven innings and giving up just three earned runs while striking out seven. The spring trip comes to an end tomorrow when the Cougars meet up with SUNY Plattsburgh at 8 a.m.
