NEW ULM, Minn. – The Cougars (13-23, 7-11 UMAC) playoff chances were dashed on Tuesday when Martin Luther (9-25, 8-10 UMAC) handed UMM a 4-3 loss in ten innings. Morris did win the non-conference game 8-3 to split the doubleheader.
GAME 1
Eric Terres walked to lead off the game for UMM, after moving up to second on a sac bunt he scored on an error by the pitcher. Gessell put Morris up 2-0 in the third with a triple to center, driving in
Chandler Erickson. Martin Luther cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third scoring an unearned run.
After a couple scoreless innings Minnesota Morris increased their lead to two runs once again. Terres singled up the middle driving in
Trent Johnson. The Knights were finally able to get back on the board in the eighth inning, scoring a pair of runs on back-to-back batters and tying up the contest.
Morris could not score in the ninth but neither did the Knights and the game headed to the tenth. Johnson had a two out single in the top of the tenth and got as far as second but would be stranded there. The Knights got a two out triple from Karl Kuschel and then the game ended on a single, moments later.
Starter
Todd Woelfel did his best to deliver the Cougars a victory going eight innings and allowing just two unearned runs.
GAME 2
Minnesota Morris scored first in the second game of the day taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Terres doubled in Erickson and Fust drove in Terres in the inning. The Knights responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at two.
Martin Luther took a lead in the third to go up 3-2. That lead did not last long as the Cougars scored three times in the fifth and took a 5-3 lead. The Cougars added a pair of runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to win the game 8-3.
Kyle Glaser got his first career win on the day pitching four and 2/3 scoreless innings.
The season wraps up this weekend with a three game set against North Central in Coon Rapids.
