MORRIS, Minn. – Augsburg College (1-3) finally broke through, doing so in the 102
nd minute to upend the Minnesota Morris Cougars (0-6) on Sunday afternoon. The Auggies' Christian Metzger blazed a shot by UMM keeper
Cody Christ to win 1-0 in the second overtime.
Morris was outshot 21-5 on the afternoon, the Cougars offense found trouble after the first half ended, failing to get a shot off in the final 65 minutes of play. Christ kept UMM in the match with eight saves.
The two teams felt each other out in the early going and it lead to neither team having much of an offensive attack. Augsburg had the first shot on goal coming in the 16
th minute of play but Christ was there. About a half hour in to the match Augsburg had a furry of three shots in about a minute but could not score.
Augsburg started to put the pressure on Morris early in the second half producing four shots in the first twenty minutes.
The Auggies hit the post in the 80th minute keeping the match scoreless. The pressure increased late in the half as well but Augsburg never found a way to breakthrough so the match moved to overtime.
In the first overtime period the Augsburg pressure continued as they put up four shots and nearly scored on a cross through the six yard box. Metzger put a shot on net in the first minute of the second overtime but Christ was there. Just forty seconds later he was at it again, this time blasting one into the back of the net.
Morris is back at home on Tuesday when they host Martin Luther in a non-conference contest.
