MORRIS, Minn. – On windy day the Cougars (1-6, 1-1 UMAC) scored a goal and added one late to win 2-0 over Martin Luther (2-3, 0-1 UMAC), picking up their first win of the year.
Cody Christ made six saves to earn his first cleansheet of the season.
Minnesota Morris controlled much of the possession the early going and it paid off when
Austin Keller scored on a volley in the third minute. Zach Jacobson crossed the ball from the right side and found Keller on the back post.
Morris continued to threaten but playing against the wind aided the Knights in getting the ball out of danger. Martin Luther had a decent look at net in the 37
th minute but
Cody Christ was there to make a save.
Bona Usha nearly made it 2-0 in the 47
th minute but the Knight keeper was there to make the save. Usha had another chance in the 53
rd minute but attempt went wide.
The best chance for Martin Luther may have come in the 60
th minute when Aaron Swanson was nearly in all alone but rushed his shot and it went high. Swanson found himself with another scoring chance in the 62
nd minute but Christ kicked saved it away. On a corner in the 64
th minute Erich Osterman put a head to the ball but it was picked up by Christ just underneath the crossbar.
Late in the match
Zachary Jacobson drove down the right side of the pitch, taking the ball all the way into the box and drilled a ball over the keeper to put the Cougars up 2-0. The match ended that way just five minutes later in a match that was closer than its 23-8 shot total.
The Cougars are back at home this Saturday when they host Northland starting at 2 p.m.
