MORRIS, Minn. – The Cougars defense forced four turnovers but Northwestern was able keep the UMM offense in check as they came into Morris and left with a 27-0 victory. Minnesota Morris (1-2, 1-1 UMAC) were outgained by the Eagles (2-1, 2-0 UMAC) 309-128 on the day.
It was sloppy first quarter with five combine fumbles and an interception. The turnover battle was even with the Eagles losing two fumbles and Morris tallying a lost fumble and interception. BJ Foster put Northwestern on the board with a four yard touchdown run, capping off a five play drive.
Morris threatened to score early in the second quarter driving to the Eagles 30 but the drive stalled after four straight incomplete passes. Ben Lyons would put UNW up 10-0 with a 33 yard field goal with 2:49 left in the half. Late in the half the Cougars recovered a fumble at the Eagles 14 yard line and looked to pull within a score. Unfortunately
Devan Griffin's pass was intercepted in the end zone on second down.
Northwestern took the opening kick in the second half and went on an 11 play drive, capped off by a seven yard touchdown run by Jordan Joseph. Neither team had much else go right in the quarter as neither team had a drive over six plays and possession changed hands six times.
The Eagles extended their lead to 24 with 12:15 left in the game with another Joseph touchdown. Lyons showed his leg power by adding a 42 yard field goal to give Northwestern the 27-0 lead late in the fourth.
Jake Wirz had 12 tackles in the contest to lead the team in that category.
Colin Everson had a great game defensively as well. He finished with nine tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry. The Cougars finished the day with nine tackles for loss in the game.
Drew Marshall and
Jeremy Sloneker also had fumble recoveries on the day.
