MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (9-7, 1-0 UMAC) got a little revenge against St. Scholastica (9-7, 0-1 UMAC), sweeping the Saints on Saturday in the UMAC Game of the Week. It was an important start to the conference season for the Cougars. Morris won the match 29-27, 25-19 and 25-19.
Marissa Ekness once again led the team offensively as she racked up 15 kills to go along with an ace, four blocks and nine digs.
Cori Becker had a season high 15 kills to go with four blocks and an ace.
Abby Tietz returned to the lineup on Saturday and tallied 11 kills.
Scholastica was up 8-4 in the first set and increased it to 14-9 midway through. Morris started the comeback with a kill from
Brooke Decker. Soon the Cougars had pulled within one and eventually tied it up at 20. The Cougars had three set points but each time the Saints fought it off. Scholastica led 27-26 but three straight kills by Morris gave them the victory.
The second set was tight but UMM went on a 7-1 run to take a 20-13 lead before winning 25-19. In set number three Scholastica jumped out to a 6-2 lead but Morris came back once again. The Cougars pulled away from the Saints late, going on a 7-1 run once again, this time to take a 24-17 lead. Ekness iced the match for UMM with a kill to make it 25-19.
Decker finished the afternoon with 39 assists.
Katie Reitsma led the team with 16 digs on the evening.
Next up for the Cougars are three straight matches away from home before returning to the PE Center on October 6 to take on Crown and Presentation.
