MOORHEAD, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (0-1) could not hold an early lead and Concordia Moorhead (7-4) scored three runs in the ninth to secure a 10-7 victory. Jackson Gessel was 2-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Donnie Mavencamp finished 5-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Concordia struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first, thanks to a double to left field.
Trent Johnson put Morris on top in the second inning. His double down the line in left drove in
Connor Spindler and Mavencamp.
Back-to-back RBI singles by Mavencamp and Spindler in the third increased the UMM lead 4-2. Moorhead got one back in the bottom of the third but Morris would respond in their next at-bats. With two men on in the top of the fourth, Mavencamp drove in
Matt Flock with a single to left. The left fielder committed an error on the ball allowing Gessell to score unearned.
The Cobbers started the comeback in the fourth inning. Three runs crossed the plate in the inning cutting the Cougars lead to just one. Concordia would tie the game in the fifth with a run and took their second lead of the game on an unearned run in the sixth.
Minnesota Morris threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. Unfortunately they could not convert and still trailed by one at the end of the seven. The Cobbers iced the game in the eighth with three runs on three hits.
Gessell homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth but it would not be enough and the Cougars fell 10-7 in the season opener.
