WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – Minnesota Morris (1-2) earned a split on Monday in a doubleheader with Hamilton College. Morris lost in game one 3-2 after a bottom of the seventh homer by Hamilton. The Cougars would bounce back and hang on for a 7-6 win in game number two.
An RBI double put Hamilton up 1-0 in the fifth inning of game one. Prior to that frame each team had just one inning where they threatened to score. The Cougars got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first. In the top of the fourth UMM left runners on second and third.
The top of the sixth started with a single by
Evan Ellingworth, his second of the game. He would score after a single and error with
Donnie Mavencamp at the plate.
Willie Fust would put Morris in front with a bases loaded single with two outs.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Hamilton rallied with one out. A hit-by-pitch was followed by a two run homer, giving them the victory.
In game two Hamilton scored twice in the top of the first putting Morris behind the eight ball.
Zach Kuefler singled home
Connor Spindler in the second to cut the deficit in half. Hamilton would go up 5-1 by scoring a run in the third through fifth inning.
Morris nearly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three runs. Ellingworth, Mavencamp and
Bryce Jergenson all had RBI's in the inning.
Chandler Erickson singled the sixth and Kuefler scored via an error on the play to tie the game up. Later in the inning
Jackson Gessell smacked a homer to put the Cougars up 7-5. In the top of the seventh Hamilton scored a run but got no more and UMM earned their first victory of the year.
Thomas Eckstein earned the win going three innings and allowing two runs while striking out five.
