WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – Minnesota Morris (2-3) split a double header with Lesley Universities on Tuesday. The Cougars fell 4-0 in game one before winning 5-1 in the second game.
Noah Grove earned the complete game win, going seven innings and allowing one earned run while striking out six.
Lesley University scored a run in the top of the second inning to go up 1-0. Morris had runners in scoring position in the first and fifth inning but could not get on the board. The Cougars nearly got on the board in the sixth inning but left a runner on third. By that time Lesley had scored three more times and led 4-0.
Both teams finished the game with six hits.
Joey Hyde pitched all seven innings, allowing four runs while striking out six. He allowed just one extra base hit.
The second game was another low scoring affair. Lesley did not have a runner get past second base until the seventh inning. Morris threatened in the top of the second but a runner got cut down at home. In the next inning a runner got to third with but UMM could not drive him in.
Morris broke through the seventh inning. The first three batters in the inning reached base on two singles and a fielder's choice. The first two runs of the inning scored via a pair of balks.
Connor Spindler broke it open with a double driving in
Jackson Gessell and
Bryce Jergenson. The inning ended on a double play fly ball.
Minnesota Morris tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh to go up 5-0.
Evan Ellingworth drove in
Chuck Menne with a sac fly to center field.
Lesley would score in the bottom of the seventh but didn't get any more. Grove's win is the first of his career, coming in his first career start.
Willie Fust went 3-6 during the double header. Ellingworth and Jergenson each had two hits. Morris had four doubles on the afternoon.
