WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – Minnesota Morris (3-3) exploded for 12 runs and 22 hits in a 14-2 victory over Utica College (0-5) on Wednesday afternoon.
Chandler Erickson,
Willie Fust,
Matt Flock and
Trent Johnson all had three hits on the afternoon.
Sam Melchior went seven innings without allowing a run, he struck out five and scattered seven hits.
The Cougars started quickly scoring two runs in the opening inning.
Donnie Mavencamp drove in Erickson with a double to start the scoring.
Connor Spindler had a sac fly to drive in
Jackson Gessell and double the lead.
In the third inning Fust made it 4-0 with a two run double. Johnson and Erickson followed that up with RBI's to extend the UMM lead to six. Morris kept scoring in the fourth inning when Fust drove in two once again, this time with a single. Later in the inning Erickson drew a bases loaded walk to pick up an RBI.
It was Fust again with a two run single in the fifth making it 11-0. Morris scored twice more in the sixth as Johnson and
Evan Ellingworth drove in runs with a RBI singles. The final run for the Cougars scored in the seventh when Johnson drove in
Noah Grove with a sac fly to right field. Utica scored a run in the final two innings of play to avoid being shutout.
Fust finished with six RBI and two runs scored. Twelve different Cougars had a hit on the Wednesday including four that picked up their first career hit. The 11 run victory marked the second time in three years that UMM earned a ten run victory in Florida.
