WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Minnesota Morris (5-4) earned two late inning victories on Sunday against D'Youville (0-4). A two run double by
Donnie Mavencamp gave Morris the 4-3 win in game one. In the second game of the day the Cougars scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning sparked by a bases loaded triple by
Bryce Jergenson.
D'Youville struck for a run in the top of the first inning, scoring on a two out single. Minnesota Morris would counter with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.
Evan Ellingworth tripled in
Chandler Erickson to start the scoring. Ellingworth would then score on a passed ball. Morris held the lead for an inning but D'Youville would score in both the third and fourth inning to retake a one run lead.
Morris would start their rally with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Two singles and a hit by pitch would load the bases for the Cougars. After a strikeout, Mavencamp doubled to center field scoring Erickson and
Trent Johnson.
Sam Melchior got the win by pitching 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Johnson and Ellingworth each had a pair of hits in the contest.
The Cougars started the scoring in the second game of the day by plating a run in the top of the first.
Jackson Gessell drove in Erickson with a single to center field. The Spartans would get the run back in the bottom of the second with sac fly to right field with one out.
The game stayed 1-1 until the top of the sixth when Morris tried to run away from D'Youville. The inning started with the first three hitters reaching base.
Connor Spindler stole home to put Morris up 2-1. The scoring didn't stop as
Zach Kuefler and Erickson drove in runs in the inning. The Spartans would get those three runs back in the bottom of the inning with the help of two hits and a pair of walks.
Melchior also picked up the win in the second game after finishing the sixth inning.
Thomas Eckstein helped secure the win by not allowing a run a hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the next inning an error and walk started the rally for Morris. A single by
Chuck Menne loaded the bases with one out. Jergenson would empty the bases with a triple to right center. He would then score on a single by Johnson to right center. D'Youville couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the inning as Morris completed the sweep.
Next up for the Cougars is a weekend series with Dort College in Sioux Center on March 25 and 26
