ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (7-15) came up short against the Macalester Scots (12-8), falling 9-1 and 4-3 in a non-conference doubleheader.
Jackson Gessell and
Willie Fust each had three hits on the afternoon.
The first two runs for Macalester came via the long ball. The first was a homerun to left field in the top of the first. The second homer came in the third and was also hit to left field. Four more runs would score in the third inning to give the Scots a six run lead.
Minnesota Morris had four hits through four innings but could not get on the scoreboard. That changed in the top of the fifth when Gessell drove in
Ryan Wynn with a sac fly to right field. The Scots responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a seven run lead.
The RBI for Gessell was his eight of the year. Fust had two hits in the contest giving him 19 hits on the year.
The second game of the day looked like it might turn into a rout like game one after Macalester scored four runs in the bottom of the second on four hits. However,
Joey Hyde would settle in and did not allow another run in the contest.
Fust put Morris on the board in the fourth with an infield single, driving in Gessell.
Matt Flock hit his first career homerun in the fifth cutting the deficit to just two runs. The Cougars added another run in the sixth when
Donnie Mavencamp drove in his team leading 11
th run of the year with a double. Mavencamp would be cut out at home trying to score from third with Fust at the plate. It would end up being the Cougars best chance to tie the game as they fell 4-3.
Tomorrow the Cougars do battle with Wisconsin-Superior in the second UMAC doubleheader of the season.
