MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (9-17, 2-4 UMAC) picked up a big conference sweep on Wednesday, beating Crown College (10-12, 2-4 UMAC) by scores of 9-2 and 9-4.
Jackson Gessell had five hits and five RBI in the two games.
The Cougars picked up a run in each of the first two innings. Gessell drove in
Chandler Erickson in the bottom of the first and
Ryan Wynn drove in
Connor Spindler in the bottom of the second.
Morris would tack an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning, increasing the lead to 3-0. Crown picked up a two out, two run double in the top of the fifth, cutting the Cougars lead to just one.
The game stayed 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth when Morris picked up an RBI single from
Zach Kuefler. Morris would get some help from the Crown defense as well, scoring runs on back-to-back errors by the left side of the infield. The Cougars put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. All the runs scored with two outs in the late inning rally, sparked by a two run triple from
Donnie Mavencamp.
Willie Fust drove in the third run in the eighth.
Joey Hyde earned his second win of the year, throwing seven innings and allowing just five hits and two earned runs. Five Cougars finished the game with two hits. Every Cougar batter reached base at least once in the game.
After a scoreless first inning the offenses for both teams came alive in the second inning of game two. The Storm jumped on top 3-0 before Morris countered with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Wynn,
Bryce Jergenson, Gessell and Mavencamp all had RBI hits in the inning.
Gessell came through in the third with a bases clearing triple to right field, putting the Cougars up 9-3. Crown got a run back in the top of the sixth but still trailed by five as the game moved to the bottom of the seventh.
Todd Woelfel earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing six hits. The bullpen tandem of
Samuel Palmatier,
Tyler Hannan and
Thomas Eckstein combined to pitch four innings, scattering three hits and just one run.
Gessell was 4-5 with four RBI and a run scored in the second game. Mavencamp and Wynn each finished with three hits. Seven different Cougars crossed the plate on the afternoon.
