MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (13-19, 6-6 UMAC) got a much needed UMAC sweep on Saturday, beating North Central (4-30, 0-12 UMAC) at Cougar Prairie Field. The Cougars won the first game 19-0 behind 19 hits from 11 players. Morris again scored 19 runs in the second game, this time winning 19-4. Ten different Cougars picked up a hit in the second game of the day, led by
Trent Johnson, who finished with five.
In the first inning Minnesota Morris scored six runs on five hits.
Jackson Gessell drove in the first run of the game for UMM.
Evan Ellingworth drove in Gessell to make it 3-0.
Zach Kuefler made it 5-0 with a two run single through the left side. The final run of the inning scored on single off the bat of
Ryan Wynn.
Gessell and
Donnie Mavencamp each had RBI singles in the second inning to put Morris up 8-0. The Cougars put up another crooked number in the third inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits. Four straight hits in the third gave the Cougars a 13-0 lead. Two more runs scored with two outs in the third as UMM extended their lead to 15.
Before the game would end Morris would tack on four runs, two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Levi Jahnke drove in his first run in a Cougar jersey in the sixth inning.
Sam Melchior improved to 4-2 after tossing five innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just five hits and struck out three.
Samuel Palmatier and
Brad Dahlen each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Just like game one Morris got off to a quick start in game two, this time scoring eight runs. Again it was Gessell who got the scoring started for UMM, driving in
Chandler Erickson.
Willie Fust tripled to right center a couple batters later, putting the Cougars up 3-0. It was his first triple since April 11, 2015 against Northland College. Morris would hit six triples in the doubleheader.
Johnson tripled in the second driving in two runs and making the score 10-0. In the fourth inning the Cougars put up their second eight run inning of the game. Erickson and Johnson each had two run hits in the inning, bookending the rally. North Central got on the board in the fifth with four runs.
Erickson, Fust and Johnson each had multiple RBI's in the second game. Johnson had five RBI's and Erickson finished with four. All nine starters had a hit in the contest.
Michael Dockendorf earned the win on the mound, his second of the season.
On Sunday the Cougars will travel to St. Peter to take on Gustavus at 2 p.m. in their final non-conference games of the season. Morris had four games remaining in the UMAC schedule with doubleheaders against Northwestern and Northland still to come.
