Saints Hold Down Cougars

MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (5-12, 0-2 UMAC) held a lead twice on Saturday but ultimately fell 10-3 and 10-0 to St. Scholastica (10-7, 2-0 UMAC) in the first UMAC doubleheader this season. The Cougars were leading 1-0 and 3-1 in the first game but could not hold onto the lead. In game two the Saints held UMM to just two hits on the way to a 10-0 win in eight innings.

Morris started the game on a high note, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. Donnie Mavencamp drove in his ninth run of the year with an RBI single. Scholastica would respond in the second but UMM answered right back. In the bottom of the inning Chandler Erickson singled in Willie Fust. Zach Kuefler also scored on the play, advancing from third on a throwing error.

The lead would last until the fourth inning when the Saints scored four runs on three hits. They would add to that lead with in the seventh with four more runs. During that stretch Morris was held to one hit. The Cougars could not ever get back in it and fell by seven.

In the second game of the day Jordan Risse kept Morris in check. After allowing a single in the bottom of the first he did not allow a hit in the next six innings. He finished with 12 punch outs on the day. The Saints would build up a five run lead by the fourth inning. A big four run fifth gave Scholastica a nine run lead and Morris never recovered.

Tomorrow afternoon the Cougars will take on Carleton starting at 2 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
