MORRIS, Minn. - The Minnesota Morris baseball team braved the cold and windy weather Tuesday and picked up two key wins to stay in the hunt for a UMAC playoff berth with a doubleheader sweep of Martin Luther at the Cougar Diamond in Morris.
In the opener, after giving up three first-inning runs,
Joey Hyde settled down and pitched six scoreless innings before allowing a run in the eighth and left with the Cougars in the lead.
By the third inning, the Cougars had pulled even with the Knights. In the second,
Donnie Mavencamp,
Lucas Luedtke, and
Blaise Fairbanks all singled in front of a
Zach Kuefler sacrifice fly.
Trent Johnson followed with an RBI single to pull the Cougar within one. A Fairbanks RBI single in the third brought home
Jackson Gessell to tie the game.
UMM took the lead in the sixth and then extended to 6-3 in the seventh. Fairbanks drilled a one-out double to right center. Two batters later, Johnson's infield single kept the inning alive in front of
Chandler Erickson who laced a shot to the left center gap that cleared the bases and landed Erickson on third with a triple.
Martin Luther scored two in the eighth to pull within 6-5.
Tyler Hannan came on and closed out the eighth and then held off the Knights in the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season.
Fairbanks went 4-for-4 in the opener as the Cougars spread out 16 hits. Gessell and Johnson each collected three hits and Erickson went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
The Cougars had a lot more breathing room in the nightcap and dished out 21 more hits on their way to an 18-6 win in seven innings.
UMM jumped on the Knights early with six first-inning runs.
Evan Ellingworth delivered the Cougars first runs with a 2-RBI double to right center. Mavencamp and Fairbanks followed with run-producing hits. Johnson completed the onslaught with a 2-RBI single that made it 6-0.
Starting pitcher
Sam Melchior maintained the lead for the Cougars. He had his change-up baffling Knights hitters as he struck out eight over six innings of work.
Martin Luther scored five times in the third to pull within one. The Cougars built their lead back up to six though in the fifth inning. Gessell and Ellingworth had RBI groundouts and Fairbanks tripled to right to score Mavencamp to make it 12-6.
The Cougars added six in the sixth with the big shot coming off the bat of Mavencamp who smashed a grand slam over the left field wall to cap off his 4-for-5, 5-RBI effort in the second game.
Erickson, Fairbanks, and
Lucas Luedtke all had three hits. Fairbanks went a combined 7-for-8 in the doubleheader.
Minnesota Morris (11-17, 5-3 in UMAC) is next scheduled to play Thursday at Crown.
