Win streak pushed to six with sweep of Rams

COON RAPIDS, Minn. - The Minnesota Morris baseball team completed their second conference road sweep in as many days with 6-5 and 6-4 wins Saturday at North Central to push their win streak to six.

The Cougars had to go extras in the opener to get the win. Tied at 5 in the 11th, Zack Kuefler laced a one-out double to left. After a groundout and a passed ball moved him over the third, Chandler Erickson delivered a clutch two-out single to right center to plate Kuefler to give UMM a 6-5 lead.

With the tying run on base for the Rams in the bottom of the 11th, Thomas Eckstein came on relieve to retire the final two batters, including a strikeout to end the game, to record his first save of the season.

Joey Hyde struck out five in 7.1 innings of work. Tyler Hannan got credit for the win as he allowed only one hit in three innings.

Erickson went 4-for-6 in the opener with two RBIs. Kuefler went 3-for-6 and Lucas Luedtke belted a 2-run home run.

The Cougars used a late-inning comeback to take the nightcap, 6-4. They trailed 4-2 before scoring four times in the eighth to take the lead. Luedtke hit a one-out double to right to start the rally. Two batters later, Trent Johnson's RBI single through the left side made it 4-3. After an RBI groundout tied the game, Connor Spindler's RBI single up the middle scored Johnson to take a 5-4 lead. After Spindler stole second, Jackson Gessell's RBI single to center plated Spindler to put the Cougars up 2.

Eckstein would record his second save of the day after retiring all six batters he faced in the final two innings.

Gessell went 4-for-5 in the second game and Johnson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Minnesota Morris (15-17, 9-3 in UMAC) returns home to face Northwestern Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. for a doubleheader.
