DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota Morris raced out to a big lead at St. Scholastica, but the Saints staged a big inning to overtake the Cougars and would later take game two to earn a sweep over UMM Saturday in the UMAC baseball opener for both teams.
The Cougars wasted no time getting runs on the board against the defending UMAC regular season and tournament champions.
Chandler Erickson singled to left to lead off the game. After a line out and a walk,
Evan Ellingworth singled to center to load the bases. With
Donnie Mavencamp up, Erickson scored the game's first run on a catcher's interference.
Blaise Fairbanks then singled to bring home
Jackson Gessell. With the bases still loaded,
Lucas Luedtke brought them all home with a grand slam to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead after one.
St. Scholastica scored single runs in the second and third. Minnesota Morris added a run in the fifth to take a 7-2 edge. The Cougars loaded the bases again in the frame.
Connor Spindler started it off with an infield single. Gessell followed with a double to left center then Ellingworth walked. Mavencamp then reached on a fielder's choice to allow Spindler to score.
The Saints scored nine times in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game as they had four doubles and two triples in the frame. CSS would go on to win the first game, 13-7.
In the second game, St. Scholastica scored multiple times in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to claim an 11-1 victory to earn the sweep.
Minnesota Morris (6-15, 0-2 in UMAC) has a non-conference game on deck Wednesday at Saint John's.
