MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris used a pitching gem and a stirring comeback to gain a home finale doubleheader sweep of Northwestern Wednesday in UMAC baseball action at the Cougar Diamond.
In the opener, senior
Michael Dockendorf threw his second complete game shutout, and fourth complete game of the season, in the Cougars 7-0 win. Dockendorf was dealing from the start as he retired the first six Eagles batters he faced, three by the strikeout. A nearly one hour rain delay didn't deter his rhythm as he struck out the first two batters he faced after the storm. He gave up his first hit on a bunt single in the fifth. The Howard Lake native allowed only four hits while striking out a season high 13 batters.
Jackson Gessell gave the Cougars an early lead with a first-inning home run. UMM gave Dockendorf more of a cushion with three runs in the fourth. Gessell and
Evan Ellingworth singled and doubled, respectively, to lead off the frame. Two batters later,
Blaise Fairbanks' single to right drove in Gessell.
Lucas Luedtke followed with a single through the right side to plate Ellingworth. An error gave the Cougars their fourth run of the game.
In the eighth,
Trent Johnson delivered a 2-run double as the Cougars spread out 14 hits in the opener. Gessell went 3-for-4.
Donnie Mavencamp, Luedtke,
Zach Kuefler, and Johnson all had two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, the Cougars trailed Northwestern 5-2 going into the bottom of the ninth before rallying to tie the game and then scored the game-winning run in the 10th to get the 6-5 win.
Connor Spindler led off the 3-run ninth with a walk. Gessell reached on a fielder's choice while Spindler advanced to second on an error. Two batters later, Mavencamp's single to right center scored Spindler and moved Ellingworth to third. Ellingworth would score on a passed ball to make it 5-4. A ground out moved Mavencamp over to third with two outs.
Bryce Jergenson reached when his grounder to third was thrown wildly to first which allowed Mavencamp to score the tying run and send the game to extra innings knotted at 5.
In the tenth, Johnson led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a
Chandler Erickson sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch moved Johnson 90 feet from scoring the winning run. With two outs, Ellingworth's grounder to third which, again, was thrown poorly by the third baseman allowing Johnson to score the walk-off winner.
Tyler Hannan pitched the final three innings to get the win. He did not give up a hit and allowed only one base runner while striking out four.
Minnesota Morris (17-17, 11-3 in UMAC) closes out the regular season Saturday at Northland. The Cougars sewed up a UMAC Tournament berth with today's victories and their 11 UMAC wins in 2017 is a new program high.
