WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Minnesota Morris baseball team collected its first win of the 2018 season Tuesday as they shutout Lesley, 3-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at the Central Florida Invitational.
Sophomore pitcher
Michael Head struggled in his season debut last week against Macalester at US Bank Stadium, but he thrived Tuesday in the central Florida heat as he tossed six shutout innings to record his first collegiate win. Head struck out six and scattered five hits as only one Lesley runner reached third base.
While Head was excelling on the bump,
Thomas Eckstein was delivering at the plate. His two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first drove in
Jackson Gessell for the game's first run. He would score in the fourth inning on a
Blake Haugen sacrifice fly and would deliver another two-out RBI single in the fifth to score Gessell again to make it 3-0.
After his work was done with the bat, Eckstein utilized his pitching arm in the seventh and pitched a scoreless frame to record the save and preserve the win.
Lesley topped the Cougars, 12-1, in the second game.
Play continues Wednesday in Florida with a doubleheader against Curry College.
