Walk-off win highlights doubleheader sweep of Crown

ST. PETER, Minn. - In home games moved to the field turf at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, the Minnesota Morris baseball team opened UMAC play with a doubleheader sweep of Crown, highlighted by a 6-run ninth inning rally in the opener.

Game 1: UMM 6, Crown 5
Crown starting pitcher Gideon Dunn held the Cougars scoreless through eight innings before UMM finally got to him in the ninth. Bryce Jergenson led off the ninth with a single to left. Blaise Fairbanks followed with a double to center to score Jergenson from first. Zach Kuefler drove in pinch runner, Mack O'Neil with a single to left to make it 5-2. Crown pulled Dunn, but the Cougars kept the rally going against two more Crown relievers. Later, Jackson Gessell pulled the Cougars within two on an RBI single to right. Nick Peterson walked to load the bases the Brady Jergenson drew another walk to pull the Cougars within 5-4. Two batters later, Bryce Jergenson was hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded to tie the game at 5. Pinch hitter Julien Shadle came off the cold bench and delivered the game-winning hit on a single to right to score pinch runner, Levi Jahnke to give the Cougars the comeback victory. UMM recorded 14 hits led by Gessell 4-for-5 effort with three doubles. Bryce Jergenson had three hits in four at-bats. Thomas Eckstein had a pair of doubles as the Cougars belted eight doubles. Starting pitcher Sam Melchior struck out ten over seven innings.

Game 2: UMM 14, Crown 2 (7 inn.)
The Cougars used that momentum to build a big early lead in the second game. UMM tallied three in the first then added six in the second. Gessell continued his onslaught with doubles in each of the first two innings and brought his total to five doubles in the twin-bill. Fairbanks and Nick Peterson added RBI singles to help give UMM a 9-0 lead. The Cougars added four in the fourth. Eckstein delivered an RBI triple and Blake Haugen added an RBI double in the frame. Starting pitcher Michael Head tossed six shutout innings while striking out eight to get the win.

After more postponements in advance of another snow storm, Minnesota Morris (3-13, 2-0 in UMAC) is next scheduled to play Martin Luther Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Northwestern's field turf in St. Paul.
