Cougars record key wins over MLC

MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris stayed in the hunt for a UMAC postseason berth with a key home sweep of Martin Luther Monday in UMAC baseball action at the Cougar Diamond.

Despite playing at home, the Cougars were the "visiting" team for today's games since they were originally scheduled to be played in New Ulm.

Game 1: UMM 10, MLC 4
Martin Luther scored twice in the bottom of the first to take the lead, but the Cougars countered right back with two of their own in the second. Zach Kuefler and Mack O'Neil each delivered two-out RBI singles to tie the game. It remained 2-2 until the fifth when UMM took their first lead. Nash Kramer led off with a single and later moved to second. O'Neil drove in another run with a single to right. Later, with O'Neil in scoring position, Trent Johnson smacked a single to right center to plate O'Neil and give UMM a 4-2 lead. The Cougars scored three more in the sixth to enlarge the lead. UMM started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Kuelfer walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run. Blaise Fairbanks later scored on a wild pitch and Johnson drove in another run with an infield single. Nick Peterson recorded his second straight win on the mound, going the distance, striking out eight over 134 pitches. O'Neil went 3-for-4. Johnson and Thomas Eckstein each had two hits.

Game 2: UMM 7, MLC 3
Bryce Jergenson delivered the Cougars' second complete game effort on the mound Monday as he allowed only three runs (all unearned) over 131 pitches. The game was scoreless until the Cougars broke through for three runs in the fifth. UMM scored two more in the seventh. After the first two batters were retired. Jergenson was hit by a pitch. Jackson Gessell doubled to left to score Jergenson; Gessell would come around to score on a throwing error to make it 5-0. The advantage grew to 7-0 in the eighth. The big hit came off the bat of Mitch Baumann who smacked a double to deep left to score Kuefler. Kuefler went 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Gessell and Fairbanks each had two hits.
