ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - The Minnesota Morris volleyball team concluded their five-game road trip Tuesday night with a nice win at MIAC-foe Saint Benedict, 3 sets to 1 (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23).
The Cougars started out on fire scoring the first nine points of the match.
Layne Herrmann started out with an ace,
Morgan Miller collected two blocks, and
Tori Everson and
Whitney Schwartz each delivered kills in the stretch. UMM was not threatened the rest of the set in turning in a 25-17 win.
The second set was much tighter. St. Ben's held a slight lead for a good duration until the Cougars took a 16-15 lead off an Everson kill. After exchanging the next seven points, the Cougars took a 21-19 aided from a Schwartz kill.
Rachel Mathias would close out the set with a kill to give the Cougars a 2 sets to 0 edge.
The fourth set played out like the second with the Blazers holding a slight advantage passed the midway point. Trailing 17-14, the Cougars went on a 6-1 spurt to take a 20-18 lead. UMM would extend the lead to 23-19. St. Ben's would cut the deficit to 24-23 before a Herrmann kill ended the match.
Miller led three Cougars in double figures with 13. Everson collected 12 and Mathias added 11. The blocking duo of Mathias and Miller added six and five blocks, respectively. Herrmann totaled 42 assists and
Alyssa Ukestad led with 17 digs.
Minnesota Morris (9-8) returns home for the final UMAC triangular of the season Wednesday when they entertain St. Scholastica and North Central beginning at 3 p.m.
