Westminster Defeats UMN Morris, 17-14

Senior quarterback Drew Shipley throws for two touchdowns Saturday

MORRIS, Minn. – The UMN Morris football team (1-6, 1-4 UMAC) dropped a 17-14 decision against Westminster (3-5, 3-3 UMAC) Saturday afternoon at Big Cat Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first quarter, Brad Hammel put the Blue Jays on the board with a 39-yard field goal with 14:02 to play in the first half.
  • The 3-0 score remained until Tim Branneky connected on a UMAC record 58-yard field goal with five seconds left in the first half to make it 6-0.
  • The Cougars got on the board with 2:15 left in the third quarter on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Drew Shipley to Cameron Geyer. Freshman Kaden McKibben tacked on the PAT to make it 7-6 in favor of the Cougars.
  • Bryce Moorman then found Travion Mosby for an 86-yard touchdown pass to put the Blue Jays in front 12-7. Kalyn Davis rushed the ball to score on the two-point conversion to give Westminster a 14-7 lead with 10:33 to play in regulation.
  • Westminster added to its lead with 3:03 to play on a 45-yard field goal from Branneky.
  • Trailing 17-7, Shipley completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Sheridan with 1:46 to play, which capped off a six-play, 75-yard drive for the Cougars.
  • Following the touchdown, the Cougars were unable to recover the onside kick.

NOTABLES

  • Shipley was 15-for-27 for 178 yards, and two touchdowns.
  • Caleb Hormann led the Cougars with 13 tackles (nine solo, four assisted).

The Cougars are on the road at Martin Luther on Saturday, Nov. 2. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. kick in New Ulm, Minnesota.
