AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team (2-1) split its first doubleheader of the season on Tuesday, March 19, against the Maine-Farmington Beavers (2-2).
The Cougars dropped an 8-6 decision in the first game before tallying a 5-3 win to cap off the doubleheader.
Game One Recap
Minnesota Morris opened up the day with a pair of runs in the top of the second as both runs were scored via two different fielder's choices.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Beavers rattled off five runs to take their first lead of the afternoon. The Cougars then responded with a pair of RBI singles to center field from Blaise Fairbanks and Brady Jergenson to cut the deficit to 5-4 in the third. The Beavers got a run back in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 6-4.
Maine-Farmington scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, which proved to be beneficial as the Cougars scored twice in the top of the sixth.
The Beavers were able to keep the Cougars off the board in the top of the seventh to secure the 8-6 victory.
Game Two Recap
Similar to the first game of the twin bill, the Cougars scored a pair of runs in the second inning to take the early lead. Minnesota Morris struck first on a Josh Doss double to right field to score Fairbanks and then two batters later, Doss scored on a double to left field from Alex Baumann.
The Beavers then knotted things up at 2-2 in the top of the third.
With the score still tied at 2-2, Julien Shadle grounded out to third base to score Baumann to put the Cougars back in front at 3-2 in the fifth.
With an RBI already under his belt from earlier in the game, Baumann tripled to left field to bring home Michael Nezerka and Doss to put the Cougars up 5-2.
Joe Wehr took over on the mound for Brian Vanyo in the top of the seventh for the Cougars with a 5-2 lead. Wehr allowed a run, but was able to close things out and pick up his first save of the season.
For Vanyo, he pitched six innings, struck out four, allowed a pair of runs and walked two batters.
The Cougars continue their spring break trip on Wednesday, March 20, against Hope College. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. (EDT).
