Cougars Earn Series Split

Baseball tallies a split against North Central Friday

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team (3-15, 1-5 UMAC) split a pair of games against North Central (9-10, 2-2 UMAC) on Friday afternoon at Cougar Diamond. North Central took the first game 7-4 before Minnesota Morris picked up a 5-1 win in the finale.

For the Cougar offense, Julien Shadle picked up three RBI in game one and Blaise Fairbanks had two RBI in game two.

Game One Recap
The Cougar offense came out roaring in the first game with four runs in the top of the first inning. In the opening frame, Brady Jergenson hit a solo homer to center field to put the Cougars on the board at 1-0. Three batters later, Shadle hit a three-run shot to left field to make it a 4-0 contest.

North Central cut into the Minnesota Morris lead with three runs in the bottom of the second to get within one at 4-3. The Rams then tallied a run in the fifth and the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.

With the score still at 5-4 in favor the Rams heading into the bottom of eighth, North Central tacked on two more runs. North Central held the Cougars off the board in the top of the ninth to secure the 7-4 victory in the opener.

Game Two Recap
Similar to the opener, the Cougars jumped out to an early lead. In the first inning Nick Peterson singled to left center to score Mack O'Neil to make it 1-0. Minnesota Morris then added three runs in the second via an O'Neil single and a two-RBI single from Fairbanks.

In the sixth inning, Blake Haugen doubled to left field to extend the lead to 5-0. North Central got on the board in the bottom of the eighth with a run, but wouldn't strike again as Minnesota Morris held on to the 5-1 lead.

On the mound for the Cougars in game two, Joe Wehr struck out 10, allowed six hits and just one run in eight innings of action. Thomas Eckstein pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Cougars.

The Cougars now head to Duluth, Minnesota, to take on St. Scholastica on Saturday, April 20, for a doubleheader. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
