Offense Erupts in Doubleheader Split

Cougars lost 16-15 and won 11-6 against Martin Luther

MORRIS, Minn. – Offense was the name of the game in a doubleheader split between the Minnesota Morris baseball team (4-18, 2-8 UMAC) and Martin Luther (5-20, 3-5 UMAC). The two teams combined for 48 runs on 76 hits between the two games. Martin Luther won the first game, 16-15, before Minnesota Morris won the second game, 11-6.

Offensively, three Cougars recorded three RBI each in the opener and then in finale, two Cougars recorded three RBI apiece.

Game One Recap
After the Cougars gave up 13 runs over the first two innings, Minnesota Morris chipped away at the lead throughout the game to get to 16-15 after eight innings.

A two-run single from Nick Peterson got Minnesota Morris on the board in the bottom of the third inning. The Cougars then added three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the sixth, to bring the score to 13-7.

Martin Luther then responded with two runs in the seventh, which the Cougars matched with three runs in the home half of the inning.

With the score in favor of Martin Luther at 15-10, the Knights added a run in the top of the eighth, which proved to be crucial as the Cougars scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning. Marin Luther was able to hold off Minnesota Morris in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the 16-15 victory. 

Game Two Recap
After Martin Luther jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Cougars responded a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The Knights then took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the top of the second.

Trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the second, Minnesota Morris tacked on six runs to build an 8-4 lead after two innings of play. The Cougars then added a run in the fourth and two runs in the seventh to make it 11-4 in favor of the home team.

The Knights plated two runs in the top of the ninth, but that would be it as the Cougars captured the 11-6 victory.

The Cougars head to Ashland, Wisconsin, for a doubleheader against Northland on Saturday, April 27. The doubleheader gets underway at noon.
