Cougars Roll Past Lumberjacks

Nick Peterson went 6-for-8 at the plate with six RBI

ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team bats were red hot as the Cougars (6-18, 4-8 UMAC) swept the Northland Lumberjacks (9-19-1, 3-7 UMAC) in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Cougars took game one by a score of 17-6 in eight innings before tallying a 23-2 seven-inning win in game two.

Outfielder Nick Peterson finished the day with six RBI as he went 6-for-8 at the plate between the two games.

Game One Recap (Eight Innings)
After falling behind 6-1 after four innings of play, the Cougar offense rattled off 16 runs over the final four innings for the win.

In the fifth inning, the UMN Morris offense posted five runs and then added eight runs in the seventh inning to build their lead to 14-6.

Then in the eighth inning, UMN Morris scored three more runs to make it 17-6. Northland was unable to keep the game going in the bottom of the eighth, which gave the Cougars the 17-6 win.

Freshman Alex Baumann paced the Cougar offense in game one as he went 4-for-6 with four RBI. Peterson also tallied four RBI as he went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Game Two Recap (Seven Innings)
After two innings of scoreless play, the Cougar offense scored nine run in the third and eight in the fourth to jump out to a 17-0 lead. UMN Morris then scored another three runs in the fifth and sixth inning to bring the game to 23-0. Northland scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough to extend the game, which gave UMN Morris the 23-2 win.

Blaise Fairbanks went 3-for-4 with six RBI during the second game and Peterson continued his outstanding day at the plate as he went 4-for-4 and scored two RBI.

On the mound for the Cougars in the second game, Joe Wehr pitched five scoreless innings and he struck out eight batters in the win.

The Cougars now head to Northfield, Minnesota, to take on Carleton on Sunday, April 28. Play gets underway at noon.
