ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team went a man up in the 36th minute but were unable to build on the advantage and suffered a 2-1 loss on the road to Northland College on Friday afternoon. The loss was the first of the UMAC season for the Cougars and puts them at 2-7-1 (2-1-1 UMAC) on the season.
Lucas Harmon came up with a number of great saves in the first half to keep the match scoreless almost up until the halftime break. Five of his six saves came in the opening 45 minutes and Minnesota Morris were gifted a man advantage when Nick Diaz was given his second yellow card of the match in the 36th minute. With just seconds left until halftime, a cross from Brad Whiles found Rodane Williams at the back post for a header to put the LumberJacks ahead, 1-0.
The second goal of the match came off an Ainsworth Grant free kick from distance to stun the Minnesota Morris defense and make it 2-0 in the 53rd minute. The Cougars answered back in the 58th minute thanks to a foul in the box from Northland.
Ben Heyel dispatched the penalty to make it 2-1.
Ultimately, that would turn to be the final shot of the match for Minnesota Morris as Northland locked down on defense and limited opportunities for the Cougars to attack.
Minnesota Morris continues its road trip tomorrow with a match at UW-Superior beginning at 2 p.m.
