ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team gave up the tying goal early in the second half, but battled back and netted twice from there to take a 3-1 victory over Northland College. The win improves the Cougars to 2-6-0 (2-1-0 UMAC) on the season.
Minnesota Morris created chance after chance on Friday, with the fantastic play of Northland keeper Elysabeth Lough all that kept the LumberJills in it at times. Lough ended with 11 saves, many of the acrobatic variety to keep it close.
The Cougars were able to take the lead in the 11th minute with
Emma Giere finding the back of the net off a corner kick from
Hannah Pedderson. Giere's initial shot hit the post, but she was there for the ricochet and made no mistake with the second effort. For the rest of the half,
Monica Calderon peppered Lough with four shots, but the Northland keeper made the save on each of them to keep it 1-0.
Coming out of the break, Northland weaved through the UMN Morris defense and scored in 20 seconds to knot the score at 1-1. The Cougars weren't down for long. Lough was forced into saves off of shots from
BeBe Say, Giere, and
Kim Peters in short succession following that goal from the Jills. The breakthrough for Minnesota Morris came in the 57th minute as
Kim Peters notched her fourth of the season off an assist from
Gracie Campos to make it 2-1.
The Cougars continued to apply pressure on the Northland defense and were rewarded with a third goal in the 77th minute as Giere had a shot squeeze underneath Lough to put Minnesota Morris up, 3-1. Calderon had the assist on the goal. Following the goal from the LumberJills to tie it, they had just one more shot in the match, saved by
Bernadette Cienik in the closing minutes.
Minnesota Morris ended with a 14-5 edge in total shots in the match. Giere and Calderon each had four shots apiece. Cienik ended with four saves to get the win.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow at UW-Superior for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
