UW-Superior Recovers to Down Women’s Soccer

The Yellowjackets went a goal down early, but came back to defeat the Cougars, 4-1, and lock up a regular season UMAC title.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team started Friday's match with the University of Wisconsin-Superior about as well as they could have hoped. The Cougars were in front inside of two minutes and very nearly added a second. After that, the Yellowjackets created a number of solid scoring opportunities and were able to convert enough of them to come away with a 4-1 victory.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the second minute with the first shot of the match. UW-Superior's goalkeeper, Jenna Lang, made a poor effort at a pass out of the back and left the goalmouth wide open for Shannon Young, who took a touch and then didn't make a mistake. That put Minnesota Morris ahead, 1-0, and the Cougars nearly doubled it in the fourth minute as the Yellowjacket keeper again found herself out of position. This time Kim Peters was in on goal and placed the shot about as perfectly as she could of, but Lang dove and just got a finger to it to push it wide.

UW-Superior knotted the score in the 10th minute as Annah Schussman was able to get all the way to the end line and then play a ball back across the middle to an open Tori Vosburg to tap in. Schussman then scored the winner in the 28th minute as she squeezed a ball in past Bernadette Cienik at the near post. Schussman added a dagger with just 32 seconds left in the first half, picking out a corner through a mass of defenders in the box.

The second half was played more or less on even terms, though UW-Superior did add one final goal in the 82nd minute. Ava Giswold was the scorer as she sent a shot high over Cienik to close the scoring.

Cienik ended the match with two saves, while Lang was forced into six for the Yellowjackets. Monica Calderon had three shots for the Cougars, while Peters, Young, and BeBe Say all had two each.

The win by UW-Superior locks into place a rematch between these two sides in the UMAC semifinals on Nov. 3. Before that, Minnesota Morris will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow at Cougar Field, hosting Northland College in the regular season finale at 1 p.m.
