MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team produced plenty of chances on Saturday in their home finale against Northland College, but a 23-11 edge in total shots ended with nothing to show for it as the LumberJills snuck a goal in the second half and came away with a 1-0 victory.

The first half was played mostly on one end of the field as Minnesota Morris had a 16-5 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Cougars kept Northland goalkeeper Elysabeth Lough busy, but Lough made five saves and the other shots from UMN Morris were either blocked away or off-target. The LumberJills actually had the best chance of the first half as a foul gave the visitors a free kick just past the half-hour mark and Greta Keffer pinged a shot off the crossbar.

Early in the second half, Bernadette Cienik was called into action with a nice save of a long shot from Keffer, but she was forced to punch it over the bar to give Northland a corner kick. On the ensuing action, Keffer's delivery was knocked down off a shoulder and MaKaria Ottum had time and space to pick out a corner with her shot, putting Northland in front in the 53rd minute.

After falling behind, Minnesota Morris was unable to produce as many chances as in the first half. Monica Calderon had three shots late in the match but all three were saved by Lough to preserve the shutout and the victory for Northland.

Cienik ended the day with a pair of saves in goal for UMN Morris. Kim Peters had nine shots, all in the first half, including four on goal. BeBe Say had five shots and Calderon ended with four.

The Cougars head into the UMAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will visit UW-Superior on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. in a semifinal match.
