ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team had chances, but it was Northland College who converted its opportunity in the first minute of overtime on Saturday, giving the LumberJacks a 1-0 victory over the Cougars. UMN Morris dropped to 1-1-0 (1-1-0 UMAC) on the year.
Northland had three shots on frame in the first half, but
Lucas Harmon was on the spot with saves in the 10th, 22nd, and 29th minutes. Minnesota Morris produced its best opportunity with a flurry in the 42nd minute. A shot from
Devon Thompson was saved by Jamie Colvill before a follow-up shot from
Dominik Cantu-Polster was cleared off the line by the Northland defense to keep the match scoreless.
The match grew chippy in the second half, but few chances were produced by either side. Both shots for the Cougars in the half came within a minute of each other as Thompson and
Carter Watkinson each put balls on target that were saved by Colvill. In the 89th minute, Diego Castaneda hit the post for Northland to send the game into an extra session.
The overtime period lasted only 51 seconds until Carlos Ponce scored on a shot assisted by Jonah Evans to give the LumberJacks the golden goal.
Harmon made three saves in the match for the Cougars. Cantu-Polster and Thompson each had two shots.
The men's soccer team returns to Big Cat Stadium on April 13, hosting Martin Luther College at 3:30 p.m.
