MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team drew 1-1 with Martin Luther College at a snowy Big Cat Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. In an entertaining match with solid scoring chances for both sides, the Knights took the lead in the 68th minute only to see the Cougars pull it back level in the 79th minute. With the tie, Minnesota Morris is now 1-1-1 overall and in the UMAC on the season.
In a scoreless first half,
Carter Watkinson had two of the best chances to open the scoring. In one instance, Martin Luther keeper Josh Higgins was able to corral the ball as Watkinson attempted to dribble around him into what would have been an open net. Just a few minutes later, Higgins denied Watkinson with a fingertip save on a ball that was tracking towards the lower-left corner of the net.
Clay Hirsch put the Knights ahead in the 68th minute with a header off of a cross that resulted in build-up play from Isaias Santos and David Martin. That 1-0 lead would hold for 10 minutes, but Minnesota Morris got one in the back of the net in the 79th minute. Watkinson,
Carver Hammond, and
Corbin McCall had created numerous chances down the right throughout the match and the Cougars finally took advantage. A ball sent low through the 18-yard box was clipped home from close range by
Devon Thompson, with assists on the goal from Hammond and McCall. Tied at 1-1, the match would move into overtime.
The poor conditions seemed to sap the energy from the match in the 20 minutes that followed. Martin Luther had three shots between the two overtime sessions, while Minnesota Morris had two. Neither Higgins nor
Jake Peterson were overly troubled and the match ended in a draw.
Of the 12 shots in the match for Minnesota Morris, Watkinson and Hammond had four apiece. Peterson made six saves on the afternoon for the Cougars.
Minnesota Morris is back home on April 17, hosting the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 5 p.m.
