Early Goals Propel Women’s Soccer Past Northland, 4-1

The Cougars struck for three goals in the opening 20 minutes on Saturday.

ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team didn't waste any time getting started in their first road match of the 2020-21 season. The Cougars jumped out on top of Northland College just over a minute into the match and added two more goals before proceedings were 20 minutes old. That early offensive blitz proved to be the difference on the afternoon in a 4-1 victory over the LumberJills. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 2-1-0 (2-0-0 UMAC) on the year.

Jay Kwateh got the scoring started on 75 seconds as she emerged from a pack of players in the midfield and struck the ball to the top-right corner to make it 1-0 with her first career goal. In the ninth minute, BeBe Say got in on the act with her first career goal. Monica Calderon maintained control of the ball and laid it off for Say to strike with her left foot for a 2-0 edge.

Minnesota Morris enjoyed an 18-1 edge in corner kicks in the game, including a 12-0 advantage in the first half. Hannah Pedderson was able to take advantage of one of those opportunities in the 19th minute as she headed home the cross from Harper Toward. Northland was able to make a dent in the Cougar lead with a 36th-minute goal from Kelsie Shields after a slight misplay from a UMN Morris defender created a chance for Shields to get one-on-one with goalkeeper Bernadette Cienik.

Though the door was left open slightly in the first half by the Cougars, they slammed it shut in the second half, controlling possession and creating chances throughout the second 45 minutes. One of those chances finally paid off for Sam Tate in the 73rd minute as she hit a first-time shot into the lower-left corner after a square ball from Toward.

Cienik earned the win for Minnesota Morris, working the first 45 minutes and making a pair of saves. Megan Tschida was in goal for the second half and had one save. Tate and Say each had three shots in the match, two of which were on target.

Next up for Minnesota Morris is a return home to Big Cat Stadium where the team will face Martin Luther College on April 13 starting at 1 p.m.
