Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Fights Back to Defeat Martin Luther, 2-1

Despite creating the majority of the chances throughout the match, Minnesota Morris trailed early in the second half before scoring twice to earn the victory.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team missed a number of opportunities to jump ahead on Martin Luther College in the first half, then saw the Knights take the lead in the 53rd minute. Jolted by falling behind, the Cougars stormed back with goals in the 58th and 78th minutes to nab a 2-1 victory. The win improves UMN Morris to 3-1-0 (3-0-0 UMAC) on the season.

The first half was frustrating for the Cougars, who had a 9-4 edge in shots. Six of those shots were saved by Martin Luther's Mollie Fischer, but other opportunities were missed in front of goal that could have built up a lead for Minnesota Morris before the break.

Controlling possession and pushing numbers forward, Minnesota Morris was caught by a counterattack from Martin Luther in the 53rd minute. The Knights first hit the crossbar courtesy of Nicole Porter and the ball then rebounded to Erika Rosenbaum who put it away from in close to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.

That seemed to be the spark that Minnesota Morris needed as the Cougars hit back just five minutes later to knot the score at 1-1. Hannah Pedderson caused a turnover in midfield and Harper Toward was able to slide a ball through the middle of the field to Monica Calderon who finished smartly past Fischer to knot the score at 1-1.

Toward followed that up by scoring the game-winner. Pressing the Knight back line, Toward jumped on a poor pass and sped in on goal, finishing in a one-on-one situation with Fischer to put the Cougars ahead, 2-1, with less than 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Just moments later, Pedderson hit the crossbar with a shot that would have put the match away, but the UMN Morris defense was able to lock things down in the closing minutes and come away with the win.

The Cougars ended with a 16-9 edge in total shots, including 11 on goal in comparison to five for Martin Luther. Bernadette Cienik came up with four saves. Calderon had four shots in the match, while Toward added three. Both Pedderson and BeBe Say had two shots apiece.

Now in a three-way tie for first place in the UMAC, Minnesota Morris is back home on April 17 hosting one of those other two teams, the University of Wisconsin-Superior, at 2:30 p.m.
