MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team fought through a heavy downpour throughout much of Wednesday's match and scored in double overtime to defeat the University of Northwestern, 1-0.
Devon Thompson had the assist on the goal by
Corbin McCall to hand the spoils to the Cougars on the day.
Northwestern produced the majority of the chances throughout regulation, but
Jake Peterson was the on the spot for seven saves to deny the Eagles the lead. With rain noticeably altering the speed of play, quality opportunities were few and far between much of the way. Both teams tended on rely on chances from distance to beat the goalkeeper and the plan was unsuccessful as the match headed to overtime.
In the first extra session, a giveaway led to a golden opportunity for Thompson, but he rang the crossbar with what could have been the game winner. The match then headed to a second overtime and this time Thompson was able to pick up the ball deep and ping a 25-yard ball through the heart of the Northwestern defense, ricocheting off a defender and allowing McCall to pick it up in stride with only the keeper to beat. Racing downfield, McCall opened up his body and picked out a corner to beat Austin Gunkel and give the Cougars the golden-goal victory.
Thanks to his seven saves, Peterson picked up the shutout for Minnesota Morris. Thompson led the offense with a pair of shots in the match.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday with a trip to Ashland, Wis. to take on Northland College at 3:30 p.m.
