Cougar Women’s Soccer Downs the Eagles in UMAC Opener

Monica Calderon scored twice and assisted on the third goal in a 3-0 victory for Minnesota Morris.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team took an early lead and put the match away late with two goals within 90 seconds of each other in a 3-0 win over the University of Northwestern. The win, the first collegiate victory of Head Coach Bianca Keil's career, moves the Cougars to 1-1-0 (1-0-0 UMAC), while the Eagles drop to 4-5-0 (0-2-0 UMAC).

The scoring opened just inside of 10 minutes as Harper Toward high-pressed the Northwestern back line and caused a turnover that she then slid through the 18-yard box to an oncoming Monica Calderon to tuck away. The 1-0 lead for the Cougars held up the remainder of the first half and throughout much of the second half.

With under 10 minutes to play, Northwestern committed a foul just inside the halfway line and Sam Tate lined up to take the free kick from 40 yards out. Noticing an unmarked Emma Giere down the sideline, Tate passed down the wing and Giere was able to shake a defender before sending a ball into the danger area. After Matteya Borah possessed the ball momentarily, the ball came back to Calderon just inside the edge of the area and she deposited it in the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 81st minute.

The final goal came in the 82nd minute when Minnesota Morris was able to counter against a Northwestern team pressing numbers forward in search of a way back in it. Calderon took possession in the middle of the field and found Tate with a through ball that cut through the heart of the Northwestern defense. Tate evaded a defender and the goalkeeper and had nothing but turf between her and goal as she made it 3-0 and wrapped up the win.

BeBe Say had the other shot on target in the match for the Cougars. Bernadette Cienik made four saves in the shutout.

Minnesota Morris heads to Ashland, Wis. on Saturday for its first road match of the season, facing Northland College at 1 p.m.
