DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team tried to contain College of St. Scholastica goal machine Morgan Friday as best they could and the plan worked for a half, but it was all Saints after halftime in a 7-0 win to wrap up the regular season. The St. Scholastica victory gives them the No. 1 seed in the UMAC Tournament, while the Cougars wait out a result later tonight to determine whether they will nab the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the UMAC Tournament starting next week.
Minnesota Morris sat back and tried to spring a counter on St. Scholastica throughout the first half and the Cougars frustrated the Saints for over half an hour before an attempted cross from Brea Archer sailed and sailed until it went in over the head of
Bernadette Cienik to make it 1-0 in the 36th minute.
The match was decided in a 10-minute span of the second half where St. Scholastica scored four times to open up a wide margin. Kaiya Quam made it 2-0 in the 51st minute and Friday scored her first of the day in the 53rd minute. Quam struck again in the 56th minute and Mara Roberts closed that stretch with a 61st minute goal. Friday had her second of the day in the 81st minute and Sami Szendrey closed out the scoring in the 85th minute.
Cienik ended the day with eight saves, while
Megan Tschida made three in a substitute appearance.
The Cougars will be back in action on May 5 in a UMAC semifinal as either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed. If they host, it will be as part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team with times and an opponent yet to be determined.
