MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris and the University of Northwestern split the points on Saturday at Cougar Field. The Cougars and Eagles locked horns in a chippy affair that produced more combined fouls than shots and the final result was a 0-0 draw. UMN Morris is now 2-6-1 (2-0-1 UMAC) on the season.
The first half was controlled by Northwestern, who outshot Minnesota Morris 11-0 in the first 45 minutes.
Lucas Harmon was called on for three saves to keep things level at the break.
The Eagles still held an edge in shots in the second half, but it was the Cougars who had the best opportunities to put a goal on the board.
Chris Goers had a header hit the crossbar in the 77th minute. In the final minute of regulation, a through ball slipped past the UNW defense and momentarily left
Mayson Palen one-on-one with Eagle goalkeeper Austin Gunkel. Gunkel was able to cut down the angle and make the save to send the match to overtime.
Neither team had any fantastic opportunities in the 20 minutes of extra time, though Harmon was once again busy, making four saves. The one for Minnesota Morris in overtime came at the start of the second session as
Carver Hammond had a shot saved by Gunkel.
Physical right from the start, Northwestern ended with 19 fouls committed and were tagged with four yellow cards. The Cougars matched the intensity of the Eagles and ended with 13 fouls and three bookings.
Minnesota Morris goes on the road next weekend for the Wisconsin swing in UMAC play. First up is a trip to Ashland to face Northland College on Oct. 1 starting at 2 p.m.
