MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team struggled to put the clamps on Megan Moeller and that was all that the University of Northwestern needed to come away with a 2-0 win over the Cougars on Saturday at Cougar Field.
The opening goal of the contest came in the 14th minute off of a Minnesota Morris goal kick. The Cougars didn't control the kick from
Bernadette Cienik, with UNW's Emily Currie taking possession in the final third for the visitors. She slipped a pass to Moeller who beat Cienik at the far post to make it 1-0. Despite a large shot advantage throughout the first half, Northwestern was unable to score again, sending the match to halftime with the visitors out in front by a goal.
Early in the second half, Northwestern scored again with a nice move down the right side of the field. Moeller was able to find space, but her shot was saved by Cienik. The ball then caromed off a Minnesota Morris defender and back into Moeller's path who scored with her second attempt.
The Cougars locked in defensively from there and gave Northwestern very little, however the UMN Morris attack was repelled by the Eagles and UNW held on for the 2-0 win.
Cienik ended with six saves on the day. Shots in the match for Minnesota Morris came from
Monica Calderon,
Hannah Pedderson, and
BeBe Say.
The Cougars are back in action next weekend on the road. First up is a trip to Northland College on Oct. 1 for a match beginning at 4:30 p.m.
