Women’s Soccer Drops Home Finale to Bethany Lutheran

The Cougars cut into the deficit in the second half but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 3-1 loss to the Vikings.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell to Bethany Lutheran College, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon. The loss on Senior Day for the Cougars drops them to 3-11-3 (3-6-3 UMAC).

Bethany Lutheran opened the scoring with an eighth-minute goal from Ashley Casper. Both other Viking shots in the first half were off target, while Minnesota Morris had just one shot from Kim Peters that required a save from BLC's goalkeeper, Brooke Wolanin.

The Cougars were having the better of the second half until a defensive miscommunication in the 56th minute allowed Elena Lujan Rubio to slide in for a finish to make it 2-0.

Minnesota Morris got back in the match with a goal from Monica Calderon in the 61st minute. Maddie Schneider had the delivery on a corner kick that was headed home by one of the 10 Cougar seniors to make it 2-1.

The Cougars continued to threaten, but they didn't put another shot on goal until just seconds remained in the match. By then, Bethany Lutheran had shored up its lead with a goal in the 82nd minute from Googie Mueller to go back up by two goals.

Bernadette Cienik ended the day with four saves. Bella Toth ended with three shots to lead the Cougar offense, while Calderon and Peters each had two shots apiece.

Minnesota Morris heads to Wisconsin next weekend for a pair of matches. First up on Oct. 28 is a meeting with the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 7 p.m.
