SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team battled fiercely but came up short on Friday night in a 3-1 loss at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
The Yellowjackets posted three goals in the first half to take command of the match. The scoring opened with a goal in the fifth minute from Kamryn Hill as she finished off a low cross from Ava Giswold. UW-Superior then doubled its advantage in the 27th minute with a header from Mya Holmquist directly off a corner kick. Holmquist scored her second of the match in the 39th minute, picking out the low right corner after a streaking run down the left wing to make it 3-0 at the half.
Minnesota Morris had much more possession and created more chances in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Cougars got on the board in the 77th minute on a set piece delivery from
Monica Calderon and a finish from
Kim Peters for the final scoreline.
Bernadette Cienik ended the night with nine saves.
Bella Toth and
Matteya Borah each had two shots for the Cougars.
Minnesota Morris wraps up the regular season on Saturday in Ashland, Wis. with a 7 p.m. matchup against Northland College.
